MonaLisa Touch® Q & A

What is MonaLisa Touch?

MonaLisa Touch is an advanced treatment that uses fractional CO2 laser technology to restore elasticity of the tissues that line the vaginal canal. It’s a safe, non-invasive way to treat vaginal atrophy and prevent its aftereffects without having to resort to prescription medication, hormone replacement therapy, or surgery.

In just a few quick treatments, MonaLisa Touch can help restore:

  • Trophic balance to tissues
  • Normal vaginal functional
  • Pain-free sexual intimacy

During the procedure, Dr. Yamada uses a vaginal probe to ease the laser into your vagina. As it emits gentle, painless pulses of laser energy into the vaginal wall, it activates the production of new collagen and revitalizes the vaginal mucosa.

Is MonaLisa Touch right for me?

MonaLisa Touch laser therapy is primarily designed for menopausal women who are experiencing vaginal dryness or any other vaginal or urinary symptoms caused by hormone-related changes.

The treatment is as effective for women who have gone through natural menopause as it is for women whose menopause was induced by a hysterectomy. It’s also one of the only viable options for women who can’t safely receive hormone replacement therapy.

Dr. Yamada uses MonaLisa Touch to help address:

  • Vaginal dryness, burning, or itching
  • Painful intercourse
  • Stress urinary incontinence
  • Chronic urinary tract infections
  • Vaginal laxity, or loose tissues

MonaLisa Touch may also be helpful for women who experience long-term vaginal dryness and other hormone-related symptoms following childbirth.

How long does the treatment take?

MonaLisa Touch is an in-office procedure that takes less than five minutes. Although most women see noticeable results following the first treatment, the average woman needs three treatments for complete results.

MonaLisa treatments are scheduled six weeks apart to give your body’s healing mechanisms enough time to rejuvenate your vaginal tissues. A typical course of three treatments takes 18 weeks to complete.

What can I expect following treatment?

Many of Dr. Yamada’s patients report significant symptom relief after just one treatment, and further relief with each successive treatment.

As a painless, non-invasive therapy, MonaLisa Touch has virtually no side effects and doesn’t require any downtime, meaning you can resume most normal activities immediately.

It is recommended, however, that you refrain from having sexual intercourse for two or three days to allow your vaginal tissues ample healing time. Depending on your individual situation, Dr. Yamada may give you additional post-procedural instructions.

Some women require annual follow-up treatments to maintain their results; Dr. Yamada will let you know if annual treatments are right for you.
